PRIVACY INT | SURVEILLANCE
CHANGING OUR DIGITAL FUTURE.
BACKGROUND |
Privacy International is a UK-based charity
that defends and promotes the right to privacy,
exposing the secret world of government and
corporate surveillance. PI envisages a future
where technology will empower and enable us,
not exploit our data for profit and power.
Perhaps the greatest challenge lies in
combatting surveillance capitalism. Google
and Facebook’s pervasive surveillance of billions
of people is now inherently incompatible with the
right to privacy and poses a systemic threat to
a range of other human rights.
How could PI highlight the erosion of digital
privacy due to ever-increasing mass surveillance
on the internet?
IDEA |
YouTube pre-roll ads that use real-time data to
inform messaging. A program responds when
people choose to Skip. The time it takes to skip
initially is displayed, then the time it takes to
skip again, and so on.
The logos of Google and Facebook could be
revised to reflect the current situation, showing
their true colours as surveillance capitalists
and opponents of the right to privacy.
They could be used to simply denote the
problem and allow PI to speak to the need for
a major transformation of the tech giants’ core
business model.
